He was raised by Oh Sook-Soo and while he caused his guardian much grief he will later surprise him with his recent passion for cooking! Whether it's in his blood as a descendant of a famous cook in the Chosun Dynasty, or a hidden talent he recently uncovered, he realizes that his path in life is to become a chef. What riles the competition between his peers Bong Joo and Min Woo is the startling announcement from Oh Sook-Soo that the future owner and heir to his restaurant will be chosen by skill and not by blood line, which would have made Bong Joo an automatic predecessor! However, after many hardships and obstacles between himself and a formed partnership between Bong Joo and Min Woo, he decides to leave the restaurant and travel around Korea in order to truly understand where the many traditional recipes from around the region come from. Along the way, he'll realize the warmth, spirit, and passion that comes along with the everyday foods of the locals.

Bong Joo never understand why his father took care of Sung Chan, but he decided to let go of the resentment and treat him like a peer at the restaurant. He forms a partnership with Min Woo in order to push him out of the competition...and it works! Sung Chan announces he is leaving, which leaves Bong Joo to only worry about Min Woo as far as the competition goes.
