“The Story of the First 4 Kings Four Gods” is based on Korean myth and history. When Korea was known as Koguryo, a tribe called ‘Ho’ ruled the land. It is believed that a woman from the Ho tribe named Ga-Jin was anointed with the power to control fire. As Ga-Jin used her power to begin killing people, war broke out as the normal citizens tried to seize control from the Ho tribe. The war continued to ravage the land until one day, God sent his son, Hwan-Woong, and three other Gods, to end the war. The three Gods were known as Cheong-Ryong (Blue Dragon), Baek-Ho (White Tiger), and Hyeon-Mu (symbolized as a turtle). Together with Hwan-Woong, the Gods ruled the four regions of the world (North, South, East, and West) and brought peace and happiness.
One day, the Ho tribe decided to rebel against the Woong tribe (established by the god Hwan-Woong) because they felt that Hwan-Woong had unjustly taken all their power. During the battle, Hwan-Woong pulls an arrow out from Ga-Jin’s back and heals her. After this interaction, she begins falling in love with him. Hwan-Woong decides to stop the war out of fear that his tribe and their heroine named Sae-Oh might get injured and die during battle. He takes the power of fire from Ga-Jin and tells her he came to earth to bring peace and to protect all tribes including the Ho tribe. Although unwilling, Ga-Jin decides to surrender her power because of her love for Hwan-Woong. Hwan-Woong seals her power in a tiny ball and gives it to Sae-Oh, commanding her to rule the Southern region of the earth.
Later, Sae-Oh gives birth to a son only to have a jealous Ga-Jin kidnap him from her! Ga-Jin tells her she will return her son in exchange for her power of fire. When Sae-Oh refuses, an angry Ga-Jin throws Sae-Oh’s son off a cliff! Sae-Oh is devastated and in her rage, begins to burn the world. The three gods decide to attack to prevent the world from burning into oblivion only to realize Hwan-Woong is the only one capable of destroying Sae-Oh. In the end, Hwan-Woong destroys Sae-Oh and Ga-Jin ends up jumping off the cliff ending her life.
After the war, the earth is burning with fire and the gods bring rain for a very long time in order to extinguish the flames. Hwan-Woong returns to the heavens but allows the three other gods to remain on earth in a dormant state. He prophesized that the heavens would send a new king to rule the earth, and this would also be when the three gods would be awakened from their sleeping state. He goes on to say the inhabitants of earth will know the time has come because a brightly shining star will rise up to the sky.
2000 years later, two tribes called Hwa Chun-Hwae and Guh Muel-Joo earnestly await the coming of the new king, and the awakening of the sleeping gods. While the Hwa Chun-Hwae wanted the power of the sky in order to keep the four treasures of the gods for themselves, the Guh Muel-Joo wanted to help the new king (known as Gwang-Gae to Dae-Wang) find the four treasures to return the powers to the gods.
One day, the two tribes finally see the star shining brightly in the sky and begin their search for the reincarnated King and Three Gods. It is during this time that Dam-Duk, Suh Ki-Ha, and Soo-Jini are born. Dam-Duk represents the incarnated human form of the God Hwan-Woong, Ki-Ha the God Ga-Jin, and Soo-Jini the Woong Tribe Heroine Sae-Oh. Thus, begins the drama “The Story of the First 4 Kings Four Gods.”
